Notting Hill carnival is 60 years old, and millions are expected

to attend the West London festival this Bank Holiday weekend.

Revellers covered themselves in oil and paint to attend what's known

as Europe's biggest street party.

Although more than a hundred people had been arrested for

drug and assault charges up to Sunday evening, the Metropolitan Police

say the mood has been "overwhelmingly positive."

The carnival was born in the 1950s Britain, when racial tensions

were high and riots broke out in Notting Hill in 1958.

Rather than letting tragic events further increase tension,

local leaders found ways to bring the community together

through music and colourful parades.
