The Standby Signal No. 1 issued by the Hong Kong Observatory will remain in effect at least til noon on Tuesday.

Northerly winds are generally affecting the city under the combined effect of a tropical cyclone and the northeast monsoon.

Tropical Depression Saudel was estimated to be about 430 kilometres south-southwest of the city at 11pm and is forecast to move east or east-northeast across the northern part of the South China Sea.

The remarkable storm took the rare southwest track through the inland provinces and made its way back out to sea.

Depending on its intensity, the distance the winds from the Pearl River Estuary, and the change of local wind directions, the Observatory will assess the need for the No. 3 signal.

Swells are expected tomorrow and showers will be heavier over parts of Hong Kong.

People in areas of exposed to high winds or in low-lying areas are advised to take precautions against strong gusts and flooding.
