HKUMed changes Cantonese requirement for 27/28 admissions

HKU's Faculty of Medicine has changed its language requirements for its Bachelor of Medicine programme admissions from requiring "proficiency in English and Cantonese" to "proficiency in Chinese" for the 2027/28 academic year.

The official website's Frequently Asked Question section says applicants must be proficient in Chinese, with either Cantonese or Mandarin being acceptable.

Mandarin will also be accepted during interviews.

Responding to inquiries, the Medical School says the revision is not a "relaxation" of admission standards, nor is it targeting applicants from specific regions.

After admission, students have the responsibility to develop their own Cantonese communication skills.
