Protests staged in Philippines against corruption, economic stagnation

The Philippine' sluggish economy, coupled with severe corruption issues, repeatedly sparks large-scale protests with some questioning the policies of Philippine President Bongbong Marcos.

On the streets of Manila, there are protests almost every week.

Thousands gathered from all over the country, demanding for higher wages, and showing dissatisfaction for severe corruption and economic stagnation.

They are criticising their President Marcos for being too close to the United States, harming the interests of the Philippines.

Even a congressman joined the crowd.

Representatives of petition groups point out that public resentment has been growing recently, especially towards the current administration.

Antoniio Tiniio from the Philippines' House of Representatives says: "Very disappointed. After four yeas, we've seen the largest corruption scandal in history

since Martial law. The rich continue to get richer under this administration, while the poor get much poorer."

A cleaner, Maribel, was unable to attend the protest because of work, but she felt equally furious. She is dissatisfied with the minimum wage of 100 Hong Kong dollars per day.

She says the government is exploiting the public.

She works hard every day, but much of the money paid to the government goes missing. For example, the flood control project near her place shows no sign of progress. She has doubts about where the funds went.

President of Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc., Victor Lim, says: "During the next term of government, I think the people will elect the people in power wisely to improve our economy."

The President Marcos refutes the criticisms saying he has continuously promoted reform.

He says he is focusing on youth education, as well as actively creating job opportunities to alleviate poverty.
