Government steps up anti-mosquito measures in Tai Kok Tsui

The government on Friday enhances anti-mosquito measures in Tai Kok Tsui after a local case of chikungunya fever was detected in the district. The patient is a 55-year-old woman whose condition is stable after being admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

In Tai Kok Tsui around Cherry Street Park and Lok Kwan Street Park, several Food and Environmental Hygiene Department staff are spotted spraying insecticide at shrubs, while cleaners are sweeping leaves. The Centre for Health Protection sets up booths at the nearby municipal building to increase public awareness of chikungunya fever. The centre's staff survey passersby to see if they live close to the vicinity of the patient's activity area.

Some residents say they will adopt stronger precaution against mosquitoes, including wearing a windbreaker and long trousers.

A doctor says Hong Kong's neighbouring regions often record cases of chikungunya fever, meaning residents could contract the virus when travelling. But the doctor says it is unlikely that a large outbreak will appear in Hong Kong, urging the public to take suitable measures against mosquitoes.
