12 students felt ill after drinking energy beverages at Sports Ground

Some 12 students reportedly felt unwell after consuming drinks from bottles that were said to have been pierced.

School officials later say the plastic bottles were damaged, not pierced, and that students fell ill from running.

The incident happened at 2pm at the Hammer Hill Road Sports Ground, where a man was allegedly spotted handing out free drinks to students.

It was subsequently reported that a number of students at the Maryknoll Secondary School who consumed the beverages vomited and had stomach aches.

Multiple police officers who were called to the scene seized bottled drinks in a nearby trash bin.

The school later replied in a statement the drinks were handed out free to students by suppliers and some of the bottles were damaged, raising food safety concerns.

The school has instructed students to stop consuming the drinks, notified parents and are recalling the beverages. Reports suggest students who felt unwell were suffering from the after effects of rigorous exercises.
