Sandy Ridge Data Facility Cluster begins phased operations by mid-2027

Construction for the Sandy Ridge Data Facility Cluster enters into full swing, with CLP Power and Hong Kong Range Intelligent Computing Technology announcing phased operations will begin by the middle of next year, which is a year and a half earlier than prior expectations.

In March of this year, Hong Kong Range Intelligent Computing Technology won the tender to construct the Sandy Ridge Data Facility Cluster, which spans 110,000 square metres, with aims of developing the site into an advanced data centre.

At a ceremony celebrating the joint project between the company and CLP Power in Kai Tak, Under Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry Lillian Cheong said authorities have sped up their review of the data facility cluster with hopes of its completion by the middle of next year, more than a year earlier than the intial completion date of 2029.

Cheong added that the government will look into expanding the Sandy Ridge site, as well as raising the facility's power efficiency determined by the power usage effectiveness ratio.

This as CLP Power noted it will purchase more sources of carbon-zero energy from the mainland to build 132,000-volt substation at Sandy Ridge to power the data facility.

Highlighting the Sandy Ridge Data Facility Cluster's construction as a contribution to Hong Kong's development into an international innovation and technology centre, CLP Power said it aims to build three to four more of such clusters in the next 10 years to enhance the supply of high-performance computing power in the city.
