HK labour shortage to narrow to 130,000; AI job impact continues

The government's latest "Mid-term Update on Manpower Projection" report estimates that by 2028, Hong Kong's labour shortage will narrow from around 180,000 to 130,000.

Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun says with the rapid development of AI, white-collar jobs that require repetitive tasks are the most susceptible.

The labour chief says jobless rates among young people remain high and, the government, together with six major chambers of commerce, has rolled out a six-month youth employment subsidy scheme.

For 10,000 positions for youth, the government will shoulder one-third of their monthly salaries -- up to a maximum of 6,000 dollars while the employers take up the remaining two-thirds of the payouts.
