Venezuela to lift sanctions against journalists

The Venezuelan government and opposition representatives met in Caracas agreeing to lift sanctions on journalists and media outlets

as they move toward a political transition.

Jorge Rodriguez, president of the Venezuelan National Assembly said the measures announced Friday was aimed at strengthening freedom of expression.

It marked the conclusion of the second round of talks after both sides began formal talks in August.

During the previous meeting, they announced plans for a reform to the country's judicial system and to the process for appointing justices to Venezuela's Supreme Court.

Earlier in September, the government also lifted restrictions on social media and ordered the restoration of access to local and international news websites.
