The Swedish parliament on Thursday voted against appointing Magdalena Andersson, leader of the center-left Social Democrats, as prime minister.
248 members of the parliament voted "no" with 99 in favor of Andersson, in the 349-seat Riksdag.
Andersson's left-leaning opposition had won a narrow majority in the country's national election, but she was ultimately not supported by the other left-leaning parties in parliament.
Andersson had hoped to regain the prime minister's job, which she lost in 2022.
Her center-left Social Democrats finished as the biggest single party with 99 seats, despite losing eight seats.
