During the first long weekend after the opening of the redeveloped Huanggang port, the crossing saw crowds build up at the Hong Kong side. Secretary for Security Chris Tang explains crowd-control measures should be implemented earlier during such long holidays.
Tang says the Chung Yeung Festival holiday period recorded 130 thousand entries and exits via the Huanggang port every day. That's nine times more than regular days. But he says most travellers had not registered for the e-channels for easier clearance so authorities would further review the crowd control measures.
Separately, the independent commission investigating the Wang Fuk Court fire has submitted its report to Chief Executive John Lee. Among the four government departments singled out, the Fire Services Department was said to have failed to follow up on the long-term suspension of the buildings' fire alarm system.
Tang says a slew of measures have been -- and will be rolled out aimed at improving fire alarm installations. On the APEC Economic Leaders' meeting to be held in Shenzhen next month, the security chief says Hong Kong will step up monitoring efforts at the borders.
