There is yet another severe case of child influenza infection, with a 3-year-old boy in critical condition.
The Centre for Health Protection stated that the 3-year-old boy has underlying chronic conditions. He began experiencing a fever and cough this Tuesday, and slight shortness of breath the following day, visiting a private clinic for consultation. On Thursday, his condition deteriorated, and he went to the Tuen Mun Hospital Accident and Emergency Department, where he briefly lost consciousness. After resuscitation, he is currently hospitalized in the pediatric intensive care unit. His clinical diagnosis is influenza A complicated by acute asthma exacerbation, acute necrotizing encephalopathy, and septic shock. He travelled to the United States during his incubation period, has not received this season's influenza vaccine, and one of his household contacts experienced mild upper respiratory symptoms.
This influenza season has accumulated 26 severe paediatric cases, resulting in two deaths. The Centre once again urges citizens to get vaccinated against influenza as soon as possible.
