Nearly 6 million people in Haiti experienced severe hunger as a new United Nations report revealed a sharp rise in food insecurity across the country with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) blaming it on gang violence, and an extreme El Nino weather phenomenon.

Officials warned escalating gang violence, mass displacement, and an intense El Nino weather phenomenon caused severe drought conditions and crop failures.

"You work the soil, but there is no rain.

You plant your crops, and you end up with nothing to harvest." said a farmer.

The FAO stated that nearly half the population lacked consistent access to food.

In response, international agencies distributed livestock and emergency aid to help vulnerable families generate income and immediate food supplies.

However, according to an analysis by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, a UN initiative, the number of people experiencing severe hunger is expected to rise to 6.35 million by mid-2027.
