Japan expecting scorching summer this year

Japan braces for a scorching summer, following last year's record-breaking heat.

To combat the heat, the Tokyo government has launched the "Cool Biz" program.

The "Cool Biz" program encourages its workers to ditch their jackets and ties, and to wear shorts, polo shirts, and sneakers to work instead.

The goal of the program is to help staff manage the extreme heat.

Last summer was Japan's hottest summer in history, with nationwide temperatures 2.36 degrees Celsius above an average summer.

Heatstroke sent over 100,000 people to the hospital. For 2026, Japan authorities just issued the first heatstroke alert of the season for Tokyo.

Retailers are also expanding their business-casual lines with lightweight and quick-drying clothes.
