Japan names China its greatest defence concern in latest white paper

A latest 598-page defence paper adopted by the Japanese Cabinet,

identifies China as its biggest strategic challenge, expressing alarm

with the growing presence and frequency of Chinese warships in

the Pacific Ocean.

The annual white paper outlines the country's military activities and prioritises,

with this latest release highlighting the establishment of a defence unit dedicated to

studying Japan's Pacific strategy and strengthening its defence against China.

The paper further says "investment in defence benefits the wider economy

and people's lives," arguing that arms production can support

economic growth.

This pitch is reinforced by the document's anime-style cover,

which depicts a smiling family in a gleaming cityscape.

China's Xinhua news agency quotes analysts as saying that the

Japanese government aims to pave the way of revising its three key

security documents before the end of the year and further

advancing the country's military expansion.
