Volcano erupts on Indonesia’s Sumatra island

Mount Sinabung on Indonesia's Sumatra island has erupted,

spewing a column of black ash into the sky.

The 2,600-metre mountain erupted sent ash as high as 3,500 kilometres

and is spreading east and southeast.

Authorities have raised the alert level to "Watch," the second-highest

level for volcanic activity in Indonesia.

Increased volcanic activity occurred prior to

the eruption including dozens of earthquakes.
