Trump's envoys meet Zelenskyy in Kyiv after talks with Putin

US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrive in the Ukrainian capital for diplomatic talks on the heels of their closed-door meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday.

Kyiv says it has drawn up proposals and seeks security guarantees.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy notes that his administration stands ready for a "constructive" discussion with the US emissaries.

He has stated on Telegram before the envoys' arrival: "We are interested in bringing the end of the war closer." And further contends that "Security guarantees are needed. A just and sustainable postwar peace is needed" as he pushes for a solution four and a half years after Russia launched full-scale invasion.

Having emphasised the significance of coordinated, substantive and realistic efforts, Zelenskyy welcomes Witkoff and Kushner, Donald Trump's son-in-law, with handshakes and hugs.

A ceremony takes place at St. Sophia Square.

The two envoys travelled to Ukraine several times but it's the first time that they visit Kyiv in their capacity as US negotiators.

The Ukrainian leader, who suggested a window of opportunity to make peace exists before the US government shifts its focus to the next presidential election, says in a later X post on Sunday that their talks have unfolded and that "changes began."

Zelenskyy's chief of staff Kyrylo Budanov notes representatives from France, Germany and Britain are also in Kyiv.

According to a Reuters report, an official indicates that a third meeting with European partners is underway, and much of the conversation revolves around "how to get through the winter and what can be done before then."

Despite ongoing talks that prompted Russian and Ukrainian leaders to agree to a three-day pause of strikes on each other's capitals, both troops continue to exchange fire overnight into Sunday.

Russia's Defense Ministry says its defenses shot down 258 Ukrainian drones over multiple regions inland, occupied Crimea and the waters of the Black and Azov seas.
