Xi and Trump's speeches at the White House

President Xi Jinping and First Lady Peng Liyuan arrived at the White House at around 10pm Hong Kong time and were greeted by US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania Trump.

After playing the national anthems of China and the US, Trump delivers his speech. Trump starts his remarks by saying he and President Xi have a relationship built on "mutual respect" and by working together, the US and China have made "tremendous strides on the issues facing our two countries". He adds that they are working on a "more balanced trading relationship" including "new market access for American farmers and ranches". The US leader also says the two sides will also touch on issues including "security, technology and super intelligence."

He says decisions made in these areas today can "promote peace and prosperity for decades and decades to come." Trump also invoked Chinese-American cooperation in World War II, explaining that Americans had embraced the Chinese-inspired phrase "gung ho" from that experience.

President Xi began his speech saying he is very glad to pay a state visit to the "beautiful" United States while congratulating them on the 250th anniversary of US independence. Xi says both China and the US are great countries with great people. He notes that he is visiting the US to continue the friendship and expand cooperation -- that China and US as two major countries show their historic responsibility of advancing human development and progress. He says he is ready to work with Trump to steer the giant ship of the China-US relationship to a steady future.

He notes that China and the US are different but through candid, in-depth and continued communication, our two countries can build up mutual trust. Xi adds that he and President Trump have respect for each other and stayed in touch.

Another key appeal from Xi is that he hopes Chinese companies are treated fairly here in the US", noting that competition between the two countries should be "healthy", saying it should be a race of catching up with one another, not who wins or loses.

He says both the US and China have a responsibility to develop AI for good, ensure that it remains under human control to the benefit of people.

Xi also recalls how Chinese and US troops fought alongside each other "against fascist aggression" and the "Chinese people have never forgotten that part of history, nor have the American people". Xi also unveils an invitation for 100,000 young Americans to visit China for study exchange programmes over the next five years.

Xi also says two pandas will meet Americans in their new home in Atlanta's Zoo.

Among the key messages from the ending remark of President Xi is the possibility of the ideas of the "great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again" to go hand in hand.
