The MTR recorded 233 escalator accidents in the first half of this year, and says it will further strengthen its promotion of the importance of "keeping your balance on either side."

MTR said that on average, there are over 500 escalator accidents in stations each year, with 60% caused by passengers walking on the escalator or carrying large objects.

Nearly half of these accidents involve the elderly. MTR says it will strengthen its promotion and education efforts. Additional staff will be deployed for patrols during the summer holidays.

MTR also says it will make good use of technology, installing cameras on escalators in stations near construction sites. If screws, coins, or other objects are detected falling into the escalator, an immediate warning will be issued. Big data monitoring will also be used to deploy additional staff to assist in accident hotspots.
