Former Hong Kong Democratic Party chairman Wu Chi-wai has been detained by UK immigration authorities and could be deported this Wednesday.

Speaking to the AP, Wu denied seeking political asylum in the UK. He said he flew to London last Wednesday to reunite with family. Before departing, he discussed with the British Consulate-General in Hong Kong, but upon arrival, UK border officals suspected he intended to seek long-term residence in the country.

Wu was later released on seven days' immigration bail. He hoped the Home Office will reverse the decision and allow him to remain in the UK longer.

Wu was previously convicted of conspiracy to commit subversion under Hong Kong's national security law and was released from prison on June 30 after completing his sentence.
