NSL police arrest trio over seditious act at Prince Edward Station

The police’s National Security Department arrested two men and one woman on suspicion of acting with seditious intent.

They allegedly chanted seditious slogans and spread false information outside Prince Edward MTR Station on Monday.

Among the trio apprehended is 79-year-old former Kowloon City District Councillor Virginia Fung King-man.

She was released on bail from Hung Hom Police Station in the afternoon.

Another 43-year-old man arrested was let go from the Central Police Station in the afternoon.

It is understood the man has psychological developmental disorders, and the police believe he has been incited to commit sedition.

The police’s National Security Department says on Monday or August 31 – three people held white flowers outside Prince Edward MTR Station.

They allegedly chanted seditious slogans, spread false information, attacked the SAR government and smeared the police force with the intent to incite hatred against the government and law enforcement agencies.

On Thursday, the police rounded up two men and one woman, aged between 33 and 79, on Hong Kong Island and in Kowloon, on suspicion of violating the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance. They also searched their residences.

It is understood that in 2016, Virginia Fung and another arrested man Chan Kwun-yuk, alongside several other people, harassed the public and obstructed operations of some businesses while claiming they just wanted to “do some shopping” around Mong Kok.

During her tenure as a Kowloon City district councillor, Fung was sentenced to 18 months behind bars for fraudulently claiming rent with inflated receipts.

During the illegal Occupy Central movement in 2014, she was also apprehended for obstructing police clearance.

It is reported that in June last year, she raised a seditious gesture in Causeway Bay and was taken away by police for investigation.

Chan Kwun-yuk, meanwhile, was said to have posted inflammatory posts on social media with the intent to incite “Hong Kong independence” and was slapped with a five-month prison term.

Police say the so-called “831 Incident” at Prince Edward MTR Station had no factual basis, noting it has been tapped by people with ulterior motives to spread lies, attack the government, and smear the police.

Police say incitement is a serious offence and carries a seven-year prison sentence upon the first conviction.
