The Second Guangzhou-Shenzhen high-speed railway, will have its southern extension linked to the Northern Metropolis.
Reports suggest the project will begin construction within the 15th Five-Year Plan period -- meaning within the next five years.
The railway connects Shenzhen Airport East Station, passing through Dongguan's central district, Guangzhou Baiyun Airport and ending at Guangzhou North Station.
According to preliminary plans, the southern extension will stretch south from Shenzhen Airport East Station, passing through districts including Bao'an and Qianhai before reaching the Northern Metropolis.
Currently, Hong Kong only has the West Kowloon high-speed rail station connecting to the mainland high-speed rail network.
Lawmaker from the New Territories North Jeff Yiu says the expanded network will improve the connectivity and cater to the need for a constant flow of people and goods at the Northern Metropolis which will be home to many industries.
