Severe Typhoon Bavi approaches Okinawa and Taiwan

Severe Typhoon Bavi is approaching Okinawa, Japan, bringing strong winds

and torrential rain. The Japan Meteorological Agency warns that

rainfall over the next two days could significantly exceed

the average total rainfall for the entire month of July.

On Miyako Island and Ishigaki Island in Okinawa Prefecture,

winds were strong this morning, and heavy rain began to fall.

Convenience stores have taped their glass doors for wind protection.

Gusts of winds in the area are expected to reach up to 180 km/h on Friday

and 216 km/h on Saturday.

The wind force is powerful enough to collapse some houses.

The main island of Okinawa will also experience strong winds at that time.

Bavi is also continuing to approach Taiwan,

prompting all northern counties and cities to suspend work and classes.

In Taitung, the morning remained sunny,

but the wind and waves grew visibly stronger,

with huge waves occasionally crashing onto the pedestrian walkways.

On the north coast of New Taipei City, winds began to intensify,

and some citizens who came to watch the waves

were urged to leave by coast guard personnel.

Typhoon Bavi is projected to brush past the waters

east of Taiwan before making landfall tomorrow night

between northern Fujian and southern Zhejiang.

The National Meteorological Center has issued an orange typhoon warning,

and fishing boats in Fujian are returning to port

in batches to seek shelter from the wind.
