HK experiences unstable weather Thursday

A trough and an active southerly airstream have brought unstable weather to Hong Kong.

The red storm warning was in effect for over four hours in the early morning.

Apart from the suspected lightning death, the storm also led to class suspensions for all morning schools and whole-day schools.

Rain continued throughout the early hours of Thursday, with the Observatory issuing the amber rainstorm warning signal twice and upgraded it to a red rainstorm warning around 5 am.

Many districts recorded over 50 mm of rainfall, while parts of Hong Kong Island and Sai Kung logged more than 140 mm of precipitation.

The Observatory says showers and thunderstorms would continue over the coming days.
