Typhoon Saudel lands at Zhejiang

After making landfall twice along the coast of east China's Zhejiang Province in the morning, typhoon Saudel weakened into a severe tropical storm.

At around 8 am, Typhoon Saudel made first landfall in Yuhuan, a city under the jurisdiction of Taizhou City, Zhejiang with maximum winds reaching Force 12, bringing strong winds and heavy rain, and kicking up waves several metres high.

About an hour later, Saudel made a second landfall in the Longwan area of Wenzhou, Zhejiang.

In Dongtou district, Wenzhou, rain water gushed down the steps.

In a town in Ningbo, Zhejiang, glass panels have been shattered, with debris scattered across the pavement. Roadside vegetation like some reinforced trees have been uprooted.

The coastal highway in Zhejiang faced multiple adverse weather factors including strong winds, heavy rain and strom surge, and control measures have been implemented on high-risk sections. Some high-speed rail lines in the area were also suspended.

Preparations had been made in advance. Many coastal households have installed steel-reinforced grooves and wooden storm shutters to protect their properties.

Coinciding with the astronomical Spring Tide, expert warns the combined effect of wind, waves and tides would pose flooding risks.

Saudel was the third storm to hit the same part of Zhejiang in less than two months, something that's considered incredibly rare.

The Meteorological department forecast after Saudel moves inland, the rain and wind will affect a wide area and last for a long time, with heavy rainfall expected in several southern China provinces.
