Study reveals 40% youngsters suffers from myopia

A cooperative study between the HKU Faculty of Medicine and Orbis will offer 2,000 free eye screening slots and prepare a clinical study on myopia control.

A study conducted by the HKU Eye Centre last year showed that among 501 examined children aged 5 to 12, nearly 40% suffered from myopia.

Another community screening project by the team analyzed the eye health data of over 4,000 adults aged 50 or above, finding that nearly 45% had myopia and 6.7% had high myopia.

Individuals with high myopia face more than four times the risk of visual impairment or blindness compared to non-myopic individuals.

The team stated that the data reflects how critical early detection and active control of myopia are. The project will provide free eye examinations for 1,000 children and 1,000 adults with myopia aged 50 or above, while launching a three-year clinical study to evaluate the effectiveness of three intervention methods for children aged 5 to 12.
