Thousands of demonstrators gathered outside Portugal's Parliament in Lisbon on Tuesday to protest against the country's deepening housing crisis with young people saying it is becoming "increasingly difficult" to "build a life."

Chanting, singing, and banging drums, most young protestors called for an end to police repression following violent clashes in downtown squares earlier in the week.

Local residents expressed outrage over skyrocketing property prices and rents, driven by foreign investment and short-term tourist lettings, which have left average monthly rents far exceeding the national minimum wage.

In response to the growing social unrest, President Antonio Jose Seguro convened an advisory council meeting to address the crisis.
