Tai Po district councillor Peggy Wong steps down

Peggy Wong has stepped down from her role as a Tai Po District Councillor, citing health reasons.

She has earlier faced allegations over possible connection with controversial renovation works at the fire-ravaged Wang Fuk Court.

Wong also resigned from her positions as a member of the Tai Po South Area Committee and captain of the Tai Po Kwong Fuk and Plover Cove sub-district Care Team.

Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs Alice Mak says Wong has served the community for many years and respects her decision made.

The DAB party says they respect Wong's decision, and thanked her for her long-term community service.

The inquiry looking into the Wang Fuk Court blaze revealed that the team led by Peggy Wong Pik-kiu obtained 131 proxy votes at an owners' meeting. Media reports have alleged that at least three of these proxy votes might have come from owners who have already died.

The Home Affairs Department said late last month that it was aware of the situation and had referred the matter to law enforcement authorities for follow-up probes.

​The Government received today (September 26) a written notice from Tai Po District Council (DC) member, Ms Wong Pik-kiu, pursuant to the District Councils Ordinance (Cap. 547) (the Ordinance), to resign from office as a DC member due to health reasons. Ms Wong also resigned at the same time from her duties as member of the Tai Po South Area Committee and captain of the Tai Po Kwong Fuk and Plover Cove sub-district Care Team. The Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs, Miss Alice Mak, said Ms Wong has served in the district for many years, and respects her decision.

The Government will, in accordance with the Ordinance, publish in due course a notice in the Gazette to declare the relevant office of the DC member as vacant from September 26.
